Great Ideas are born in Great Minds!

With his ancestry tracing back to the great Malik Bin Deenar, the legendary Islamic missionary who came to India in the 8th century, Janab A.Thangal Kunju Musaliar is best known to the present generation as an eminent educationalist and the doyen of cashew industry. Few people today remember him as leader of the Muslim cultural revival in Travancore. Journalism, education and literature were the media chosen by him. Transcending the parochial communal considerations, Janab Musaliar set his eyes on activities of a philanthropic nature, irrespective of caste, creed, and color.

 Janab A.Thangalkunju Musaliar (1897-1966)

Janab Thangal Kunju Musaliar was a pioneer in the field cashew export trade in the 1940s and 50s who built up a vast business empire through impeccable planning and its systematic implementation. By 1940, he had the unique distinction of being one of the world's renowned employers. In 1950, while at the peak of his business career, Janab Musaliar became preoccupied with new thoughts, of, how best he could provide education to the new generation for the better development of the society. As a man of extra ordinary vision he foresaw the tremendous importance of education in the years to come. These thoughts have paved the way for the formation of T.K.M Educational Trust in 1956.

The T.K.M College of Engineering was crystallized in form and substance in 1956 and Dr.N.Rajendra Prasad, the first President of Independent India, laid the foundation stone. After a short span of two years, the College was formally inaugurated by, Prof.Humayun Kabir the Hon'ble minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs on 3rd July 1958. This is the first private grant-in-aid Engineering College in the state.

The college started with student strength of 120 and a faculty of six offering courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and has an enviable reputation of being one of the premier technical institutions in the country. At present the college has strength of more than 2000 students with about 200 staff members supported by 136 non-teaching staff. Right from the beginning, the T.K.M College of Engineering has been a trend setter in the field of technical education in Kerala; setting and maintaining very high standards in education with main focus on all round development of students. The consistency with which the students have been securing major ranks in the university examinations is a standing proof of excellent standards of the institution and training imparted by the college.

In commemoration of the silver jubilee of the College in 1983, several new structures were built to accommodate the increasing student intake due to the increasing demand for professional education in the state.

Golden Jubilee of the College was celebrated in 2007-08 with a year-long calendar. It was inaugurated by the then President of India Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam on 19th June 2007 and the valedictory function was held on 21st February 2009.

The college is located at Karikode, Kilikollur Panchayath, a beautiful suburb of the historic coastal town of Kollam on the Kollam-Sencottah highway. The college is six kilometers away from Kollam Municipality and the institution is within easy reach by road, rail or air with major railway station within six kms. and international airport just 70 kms. away.
